Minnesota Personal Injury Cases Make Up A Very Small Part Of Court Cases

Comments Off

The cry has been going out from tort reformers far and wide that civil lawsuits are clogging up the system, that loads of juries are giving away money like wall street bonuses, that the system is out of control. The U S Chamber for Legal Reform is emailing around a slanted survey to back their argument. One of the questions has four answers that all say the system is bad. It will be shocking to see their release in a week that a majority of people agree with their drivel.

But the numbers don’t back them up.

In 2008 there were 1,939,512 total court filing

40,580 of those were civil filings.

4,225 were Personal Injury claims

208 were Wrongful Death

129 were Medical Malpractice

Those don’t look like problem numbers. Also of interest, there were 14,143 other civil, but no specific category for business lawsuits. It is always interesting to see how often these companies that are at the heart of the tort reform movement are involved in so many suits themselves.
