Unsecured Ladder Leads to SUV Collision

Comments Off

Monday morning, a Byron woman was hospitalized after her SUV rolled into a ditch after swerving to miss a ladder that fell from a truck. The children with her were reportedly not injured. The police did find the driver of the truck.

In reviewing the incident, the State Patrol provided three warnings.

  • People are better to run over debris than to swerve away from it.
  • It’s critical that people secure their loads properly.
  • Don’t stop if you see debris on the road, it is safer to just call 911.

In covering the story the Rochester Post-Bulletin put together the following examples of these incidents:

one crash in which a person was killed after running over debris. In that crash, the person hit a 22,000-pound roll of steel.

In December, a 74-year-old Eyota man was driving though Rochester in the 100 block of 75th Street Northwest when a flying chunk of ice from a passing truck with a trailer hit the front of his vehicle. His airbags deployed, causing him to run off the road and hit a utility pole. The man died two weeks later. The passing truck was never found.

In March, a man was killed in a freak accident on Interstate 35W in Minneapolis when two tires flew off a garbage truck and into oncoming traffic.

If you are in an accident, make sure to get the names of anyone who indicates they saw what happened. If you witness an accident, check to see if everyone is OK and stay around or at least give the drivers your contact information. If you are injured, get care immediately and later seek the advice of an attorney who does that kind of work and who can explain your coverages and rights.
