“Time Out” Safety Towel To Reduce Medical Malpractice

Comments Off

Apparently with each operation, the surgeon is supposed to take a time out and make sure that they are doing the right work on the right patent. With recent studies showing that adverse events are up at Minnesota hospitals, apparently too many doctors aren’t using their timeouts. Since 2003, 150 surgical mix-ups have been reported throughout Minnesota, including 97 operations on the wrong body part and nine on the wrong patients, according to a Jan. 16 report from the state health department.

So the new idea is to place a towel over the surgical instrument that in big letters says "Time Out". Hopefully, this will lead to no more wrong patients or wrong parts operations. Clearly, it’s a simple solution that every patient should ask about before their own surgery.
