Flood Insurance: The Time is Now to Look at All Your Coverages

Comments Off

The Federal Emergency Management Agency sent of a message to all Minnesotans this week that they should consider buying flood insurance. With the stories that we may be looking at more flooding this year along the Minnesota and North Dakota borders, this advise makes sense. As the press release pointed out, most homeowners policies don’t automatically include this protection.

There should be a concern that the call is coming a bit late, since these policies don’t kick in for 30 days , it might be a policy that isn’t going to help anyone this year. I would guess it’s a way to say "I told you so" when the inevitable group of people lose their houses if there is a significant flood this spring. But, having sufficient coverages to protect you, your family, and your property always makes sense.

Take the time to review all of your coverages and make sure you have enough protection. In particular review your car insurance coverages and make sure you have sufficient Uninsured motorist and Under Insurance coverage. Also if you have more than one car insured, make sure you looked at stacking your no fault benefits. A little bit of forward thinking can make a big difference if you have a tragic loss or injury.
