Minnesota Statehood Day Should Have Us Looking At The Endangered Past

Comments Off

May 11th was Statehood day for Minnesota. While it wasn’t as big a deal as last year’s 150th Anniversary, it is a good day to remind ourselves of the importance of our past. One way to do that is to take the time to look into what is going on with our past.

The Preservation Alliance of Minnesota has continued to maintain a list of the top ten endangered historic sites in the state:

Looking at this years list I can see at least two that I go by regularly.

The Alliance has seen the interest produced by past lists work to raise money and interest enough to save a number of places. Success stories include Midtown Exchange and the Ivy Tower in Minneapolis, Saint Paul’s Head and Sack House, the Stillwater Lift Bridge, the former Red Wing High School, the Litchfield Opera House, and Virginia’s B’Nai Abraham Synagogue.

This years list includes:

Chaska Athletic Park, Chaska
Palace Hotel, Crookston
Dassel Co-op Dairy Association Creamery Building, Dassel
St. Louis County Jail, Duluth
Rock Island Swing Bridge, Inver Grove Heights
Foley-Brower-Bohmer House, St. Cloud
Schmidt Brewery, St. Paul
Distressed urban neighborhoods, statewide
Historic wood windows, statewide

If you have an interest, take the time to review the list and learn a little more about our past and with all of these places, a continued future.
