Todd County Sheriff Warns Of Email Scam

Comments Off

This week, the Todd County Sheriff office is warning people of a email scam that they are getting a number of complains about:

The e-mail claims to be sent from a relative staying out of the country who had been robbed and was in need of money. Several other people had also received the same message.

The Todd County Sheriff’s office urges the public not to respond to these e-mails. Anyone receiving suspicious e-mails should report them to their Internet service provider.

The reality is that a unknown relative or person that you don’t know is traveling, probably isn’t emailing you. Instead it is a simple scam hoping to get you to send money.

Scammers rip you off by getting you to:

  1. Send personal documents and bank details, which they’ll then sell to other scammers or use for identify fraud.
  2. Pay fees and taxes to release the inheritance (that doesn’t really exist).

Don’t be fooled by sending money you will never see again.
