The Minnesota Child Victims Act

Comments Off

The Minnesota Child Victims Act continues to make its way through the Minnesota capitol. If it gets to the Governor's desk and then becomes law, it will have an incredible effect on helping all survivors. The survivors of sexual abuse would no longer face a time limit to sue their abusers under the proposed bill.

The key provisions will eliminate the requirement that victims file civil suits within six years of becoming an adult. It would not affect the statute of limitations in criminal cases.

It is clear that it takes decades for survivors of sexual abuse as children to overcome the shame and secrecy surrounding those events to come forward. By then, the Minnesota law has made it too late. Those responsible are relieved of any liability.

If you haven't, you need to call your legislator and let them know how important this bill is.

Abuse of children and the continued silence by the offenders needs to be prevented. If you suffered, saw, or suspected such events, it is important to know that there is help out there.
