This weekend, as part of the Workers Memorial Day remembrance, road construction deaths are being remembered. Since 1960, 33 Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) employees have been killed on the job, along with 13 private contractors.
The Public news service quoted Mike Lindholt, a road crew worker with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) as saying:
"With construction gearing up like this, when things are getting underway, [there's] flashing lights and things get confusing. It gets dangerous out there – drivers texting, and on the phone, and all that. Just pay attention and slow down a little bit."
With all of the highway project going on it is important that we use this weekend to start a safe year of driving along with those that fix our roads. Keep in mind these safety tips :
All fines are doubled in work zones and those are real people standing out there in the orange vests. So most of all:
SLOW DOWN!
- Stay alert, expect the unexpected.
- Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.
- Anticipate lane shifts – merge when directed to do so.
- Don't change lanes unnecessarily.
- Don't speed in work zones; obey the posted speed limits.
- Avoid using mobile phones while driving in work zones.
- Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.
- Be patient!
