Highway 14 Really Needs to be Looked At!

Comments Off

I’ve written about Highway 14 before:

MNDOT Needs To Look At Most Deadly Section Of Highway 14, Mike Bryant | October 04, 2009 9:33 AM

Head On Collision Kills Iowa Child, Mike Bryant | July 22, 2010 7:42 AM

Apparently, there is another section to look at:

The death toll continues to mount. As of this past week, the 28th person died in the past ten years on one 56-mile stretch of Highway 14, between New Ulm and Waseca. In July two motorcyclists died on Highway 14 near Mankato, when the driver of a pickup crossed the centerline and struck them.

In comparison, a MnDot study conducted between 2006 and 2009 found the fatality rate on that 24-mile section of roadway (between New Ulm and Mankato) Between was 2.2 per 100 million vehicle miles. By contrast, the statewide fatality rate at the time for rural two-lane highways was 1.2 per 100 million vehicle miles. The highest area in Southern Minnesota was a seven-mile stretch of US 52 between Fountain and Chatfield which had a fatality rate of 5.9 per 100 million vehicle miles.

There are projects that are in discussion and plans being made. The concern like always is money. Hopefully, this area will be dealt with as the deaths continue to call for it.
