US Hospitals see a 11% increase in underage drinkingincidents over this weekend vs. any other set of days each year. These finding were a part of a overall study that was recently released:
The Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN) report also found that people under age 21 who combine alcohol and illegal drugs are 27 percent more likely to visit hospital emergency rooms over the Memorial Day holiday weekend compared to an average day. On an average, there are 199 such visits per day during the holiday weekend vs. 156 visits on other days, the report said.
I wonder why that is? Maybe it’s because school is ending, proms have introduced drinking to some, or maybe it’s just the warm weather.
No matter the reason, this is too much of a increase not to be looked at. For parents this means keeping a closer eye this weekend. The issue clearly is beyond just a little drinking when the result is trips to the hospital.
