This past week, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety released it's list of the most deadly counties due to drunk driving. They are: Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Olmsted, Ramsey, Rice, St. Louis, Scott, Sherburne, Stearns, Washington, and Wright.
Carver is a new addition to the list, replacing Otter Tail.
The 13 counties accounted for more than half of Minnesota's alcohol-related deaths and serious injuries from 2008-2010. The counties are determined based on the total number of alcohol-related deaths and serious injuries over a three-year period.
From 2008-2010, Stearns County had 11 alcohol-related deaths and 20 serious injuries. Sherburne County had 10 deaths and 15 serious injuries. Wright County had 20 deaths.
“DWI enforcement and education are solid, necessary tools to address this ongoing issue,” says Jean Ryan, DPS Office of Traffic Safety impaired driving program coordinator. “But to really reduce impaired driving incidents, we need every Minnesotan to do their part to make sure they don’t take the risk.”
Each year in Minnesota, alcohol-related crashes account for up to 202 deaths and 462 serious injuries costing the state around $275 million
