In an outbreak that goes back to 2006, over one hundred people have suffered from bacterial infections identified as salmonella. Most of the people have been infants and have been traced to dry dog food. In a report from the Center of Disease Control and Prevention, these infections have been found in 21 separate states.
The dog food has been traced to Mars Petcare in Everson,Pa. Mars announced a recall of approximately 23,109 tons of dry dog and cat food sold under 105 brand names. With the shelf life of dry dog food being well over a year, there is a concern that there is more infected food out there.

The report included the following recommendations:
- These include regular washing of pet feeding bowls to prevent bacterial growth;
- the thorough washing of hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds after handling dry pet foods, including pet treats;
- and scrupulously avoiding contact between dry pet foods and foods consumed by humans and food preparation surfaces and utensils
