Minnesota law allows for signs to be posted in any size and number 46 days (June 25, 2010) before the primary until 10 days after the general election. But, there are still restrictions on where they can go.
Minn Stat 173. 15 prohibits:
- placement on any land without the consent of the owner
- on public utility poles
- on trees or shrubs
- by painting or drawing on rocks or natural features
Placing signs improperly along the ditch or in the public right-of-way can result in a misdemeanor charge, carrying up to a thousand dollar fine and/or 90 days in jail. This is important because signs can not be placed in a manner that that interfere with line of sight and could lead to accidents.
MnDot suggests a easy test:
if it’s not on your property, it’s in the wrong place.
