Sgt. Rob Schwegel of Stearns County Sheriff’s Office said this afternoon that the department is seeing numerous crashes and vehicles in the ditch and the situation is likely to deteriorate.

“Actually the roads are getting worse and the plows can’t keep up,” Schwegel said. “The weather is supposed to get worse tonight.”

As a result they are asking all drivers to stay off the roads and wait until tomorrow to hit the roads. The city of St. Cloud declared a snow emergency effective on 12:01 a.m. Sunday. The emergency will be in effect for 72 hours unless called off early due to favorable weather conditions. Parking violations and illegally parked cars will be towed during the emergency.

While no roads are closed and as of yet Stearns hasn’t been added to the 25 no-travel counties,  this seems like good advice for all drivers.

If you have to drive,  go slow and be safe.
