Past studies from State Farm Insurance have usually had Minnesota near the top as a state for drivers to hit a deer. The number of car/deer collisions still puts Minnesota in the risk category.
The Minnesota Department of Traffic Safety’s "Crash Facts 2007" indicated that there were 3,144 vehicle-deer accidents reported last year with 336 injuries and six fatalities.
West Virginia has been number one with odds of hitting a deer at 1 in 45. Michigan came in No. 2 followed by Pennsylvania, Iowa and Arkansas. Hawaii is the least likely state to hit a deer.
Autumn is prime season for vehicle-deer accidents. With the most frequent months being October, November and December, which is deer mating and migration season.
While there is no liability claim for the driver of the car, they are covered for No Fault Benefits. These benefits are paid in the same manner that they would be paid in any Minnesota motor vehicle collision.
