As of January 1st, New Hampshire, Oregon and Illinois have now joined 16 other states that have passed laws against texting and driving. This doesn’t include the six states that prohibit using hand-held cell phones while behind the wheel. Minnesota is one of the states that have passed a ban.
This legislation has been a important issue to the American Medical Association (AMA), who at a conference back in 2008 voted to advocate for all state legislatures to prohibit texting while driving. This is also legislation that Congress have been looking at for the whole country.
What was scary in a recent Minneapolis Star Tribune article about new laws that the following quote:
Tina Derby, 42, of Warner, N.H., said she has no intention to stop texting while driving, despite the possible $100 fine she could receive.
"I’d better start saving my money," Derby said.
