The Minnesota Department of Transportation is kicking off Work Zone Awareness Week and asking all drivers to see construction workers. In 2012, there were 1,931 total crashes in Minnesota work zones—three individuals were killed. The three-year average for work zone crashes is 1,819 crashes and seven fatalities per year.
“Work zones are dangerous places for workers and travelers,” said Charlie Zelle, MnDOT commissioner. “This campaign is one of many ways we are reminding people to drive safely when they see orange barrels and trucks.”

Other safety tips include:
- Stay alert, expect the unexpected.
- Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.
- Anticipate lane shifts – merge when directed to do so.
- Don't change lanes unnecessarily.
- Don't speed in work zones; obey the posted speed limits.
- Avoid using mobile phones while driving in work zones.
- Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.
- Be patient!
